𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗲: This breakout indie drama from Princeton native Damien Chazelle tells the story of an ambitious young jazz drummer (Miles Teller) who attends an elite conservatory where he is pushed to his limits by a ruthless instructor (J.K. Simmons). Partly inspired by Chazelle’s own experiences as a high school jazz drummer, WHIPLASH features intricate film and music editing, along with an Academy Award winning performance from Simmons. Presented in a new restoration.

𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗲: Composer Justin Hurwitz crafts a captivating fusion of classic jazz standards and original compositions, creating a score that flows more like a cinematic experience than a conventional jazz album. The musical pieces are designed to intensify in response to the escalating tension in the narrative’s teacher/ student relationship. The score for WHIPLASH was meticulously produced note by note, allowing for intricate layering and manipulation that is not typically achievable. Most of the notes are slowed to approximately one-third of their original tempo, resulting in a nightmarish interpretation of a Buddy Rich big band sound. It is noteworthy that the collaboration between Hurwitz and the film’s director, Damien Chazelle, is distinctive, as they have exclusively worked together on five features, with each film offering a fresh and unique soundtrack.
